The Utah-based start-up learning management system company called Instructure, which launched an open-source LMS in February, has secured $8 million in funding from a handful of sources, according to the Wall Street Journal‘s tech blog Digits.

After going open-source, the company received thousands of inquiries from schools, says the chief executive officer Josh Coates. The difference between Instructure’s LMS, called Canvas, and others such as Blackboard or Moodle, is that it is a web-based program that relies heavily on the cloud, rather than installed software, says Coates.

What LMS does your school or district use, and have you heard others express a need for a more open-source, cloud-supported system? Let us know in the comments.
