D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray said he plans to put together a committee that will aid in the search for a permanent chancellor for the 45,000-student school system.
Former chancellor Michelle Rhee, a symbol of education reform, stepped down soon after Gray’s election. Her deputy, Kaya Henderson, has been serving as interim chancellor.
Gray hasn’t indicated any displeasure with Henderson’s work, but noted in an interview with a local radio station that the formation of the panel is required under city law. Gray’s predecessor, Adrian Fenty, failed to follow that law, Gray said.
“We are trying to do it the right way,” he told the station.
