The Houston school board has tapped deputy superintendent and chief financial officer Ken Huewitt as the district’s interim superintendent.

Huewitt will lead the district while the school board continues its search for a permanent replacement for outgoing Superintendent Terry Grier, who is stepping down Feb. 29.

Huewitt will take the helm March 1. He joined the Houston schools in 2001 and has worked as Grier’s second-in-command since last July, overseeing the district’s day-to-day operations in the superintendent’s absence.

Prior to his appointment as CFO, Huewitt spent 11 years as the Houston schools controller, tasked with accounting for the district’s multi-billion-dollar budget.

Grier announced his decision to resign last fall to give the school board ample time to identify and prepare his successor, but the transition hasn’t gone as smoothly as planned.

The school board this week cut ties with the superintendent search firm they hired to find Grier’s successor.
