The Denver district has chosen a former teacher and principal as its interim schools chief while it searches for a permanent superintendent.

Ron Cabrera, who taught at Denver’s North High School and served as principal at Stedman Elementary School for about three years, will take over from current Superintendent Tom Boasberg, who is leaving on Oct. 19, after nearly 10 years on the job.

Boasberg announced his departure in July, and the district has set an ambitious search schedule with the goal of naming a permanent replacement in December.

Cabrera has a long career in education, beginning as a teacher in Denver and moving on to become a superintendent in Loveland, Colo. He maintained close ties with the Denver district, and after retiring in another district returned to Denver as an interim associate chief of academic and innovation and helped the district this spring with its culturally responsive education program, the district said.

School board president Anne Rowe said that Cabrera will add some stability as the district transitions to new leadership. He will work with Boasberg to prepare for his departure.

“Ron’s leadership on equity and the opportunity gap throughout his exceptional career, and his deep roots in Denver, will provide tremendous stability and leadership during this transition,” she said.

Boasberg gave Cabrera, whom he described as “talented, caring, and [a] highly respected leader,” a nod of approval. Cabrera does not plan to apply for Boasberg’s job.

“Ron’s leadership capabilities and knowledge of DPS will allow our focus to remain exactly where it should be—on helping every student succeed,” Boasberg said.
