If you’re looking for ways to improve learning that don’t involve a traditional classroom, this Top 10 list from Child Trends might be of interest.

Ten Ways to Promote Educational Achievement and Attainment Beyond the Classroom” cites out-of-school goals that research links to higher achievement. The goals include reducing unplanned student pregnancies and improving the quality of child care.

Most important for this blog’s purposes is “Goal Nine: Provide High-Quality Educational After-School and Summer Programs.” The best programs generally “involve teachers and foster active learning environments; they provide academic support or homework help; and they require frequent and intensive involvement on the part of program staff, parents, and participants alike,” the brief states.

Child Trends is a nonprofit research center that focuses on child development.
