As the East Coast hunkers down for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, many high school seniors wrapping up their college applications are wondering what happens if they lose power and can’t make the Nov. 1 deadline.

The National Association of College Admission Counseling is urging schools to extend their early decision or early application deadlines to accommodate the extreme weather situation. In a statement Sunday on its website, the organization of college admissions professionals noted the predicted outages and flooding may make it difficult for students to submit their materials. NACAC is encouraging administrators to permit students to submit application materials beyond the deadline, if appropriate, and communicate the policy to applicants as soon as possible.

Many institutions in the affected storm areas have already closed their campuses today, including ones in New York, Delaware, Virginia, New Jersey, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.

NACAC also postponed college fairs in Boston and Atlantic City planned for this week. They will be rescheduled at a later date.
