Jon Whitmore, the chief executive officer of ACT, will retire at the end of August 2015, the Iowa City, Iowa-based testing organization announced.

Whitmore has been with ACT since 2010, during which time participation in the ACT college-admissions exam expanded to 1.8 million test takers, surpassing the SAT. He also oversaw the spring 2014 launch of the ACT Aspire assessment system for grades 3-12.

Prior to coming to ACT, Whitmore was the president of San Jose State University. A search for Whitmore’s successor by the ACT board of directors will begin in the weeks ahead, according to an Aug. 15 news release.
