PBS NewsHour produced a great segment on the flipped classroom, with a focus on Clintondale High School, a school outside of Detroit that has implemented flipped approaches in one form or another in all of its classes.
There are a lot of great clips, and I weigh in with a couple of points (I play the role of the bemused, slightly skeptical academic who has two big monitors; the books in my office are a prop, though the tweedy coat is mine). Here’s what I think you should most look out for: the scenes where teachers in Clintondale are coaching a student or small group, or where kids are huddled to gether working on something. Relationships matter. Time-shifting direct instruction outside of the classroom makes more time for relationship building in the classroom.
