Jim Kohlmoos, president and CEO of the Knowledge Alliance and a former member of Clinton’s Education Department, was named the new executive director of the National Association of State Boards of Education. His tenure will begin on February 2, 2012.

Well known in the education research world, Kohlmoos is coming to the National Association of State Boards of Education from the Knowledge Alliance, where he worked to promote data- and research-driven educational policies at the national, state, and local level. The Alliance focuses on closing the achievement gap and improving student achievement through research-based knowledge, and its members include research organizations, entrepreneurs, and education developers.

The National Association of State Boards of Education advocates for and supports state boards of education across the country. Kohlmoos replaces Brenda Welburn as NASBE’s executive director.

In a press release, Kohlmoos said: “I am a firm believer in the importance of citizen leadership in education governance as a cornerstone of our democracy, and am proud to join NASBE’s state board members and staff in their continued promotion of this core principle.”
