The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee has approved Mark Schneider to become the next director of the Institute of Education Sciences.

“Dr. Schneider will oversee the statistics, research, and evaluation arm of the [Education] Department and brings experience having led the National Center for Education Statistics at the department and his work at the American Institutes for Research, where he is currently vice president and institute fellow and president of college measures,” Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander said in a statement on the vote.

The full Senate still must vote to approve Schneider, whom President Trump nominated to lead the Education Department’s research agency back in November. If approved, the six-year term could bring more stability to the research agency, which has not had a permanent director since 2014, when then-director John Q. Easton left to join the Chicago-based Spencer Foundation.
