Teachers cannot work at the "whim" of a board or leader. School faculties cannot be turned over every time a leader changes. Employment cannot be threatened every time a teacher speaks out in support of an unpopular idea or against a policy or disciplines a child or doesn't pick the "right" child for the play or team.

Can we expect teachers who are facing criticism for not teaching to the standards or the changed curriculum, who are not collaborating or learning new information, to listen to even more voices? Will this change behavior or will this serve to shut down more teachers, or worse, leave the opinions of students as the "ace" in the process?

The potential the evaluation process holds has been diminished by the rush to implement. It takes time to reflect on practice and have discussions about changing behaviors. Are we allowing for the creation and protection of environments that encourage people to develop their creativity, adaptability, and passion?

We are being asked to lean on our students to prove we are doing our job using a single measure and we know it is not fair to them. Teachers and leaders are faced with the additional burden of being directly evaluated by these results also knowing there is an expected slump in results during these first years of implementation of an expectedly flawed process.

We do not have the time to digest what the Common Core Standards are telling us to do. We need time and that essential time is not allowed. To add insult to injury, students and teachers are evaluated on test results that evaluate these standards that are new and yet unlearned.
