Readership has been off the charts this week at edweek.org for Larry Ferlazzo’s article about how to help students motivate themselves. More than 20,000 people have viewed the article and we’re still counting. Ferlazzo is a social studies and English teacher for English-language learners and other students at Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, Calif.

And so I’m expecting a lively discussion today for our free web chat with Ferlazzo, which is scheduled to occur from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern time. The chat will be open for questions an hour or two before it begins. If you can’t participate live, you can read a transcript soon after it’s over.

Eye on Education is soon to release a book by Ferlazzo, Helping Students Motivate Themselves: Practical Answers To Classroom Challenges. You can find sample chapters of the book on the publisher’s web site.

Ferlazzo draws on his long career as a community organizer for ideas about how to motivate students in the long-term. For example, he urges teachers to show students the economic and health advantages of getting a good education.
