The justices declined review of a case involving Washington state's teacher-retirement system, while weighing a case being watched by Puerto Rico's retired teachers.


The high court arguments on whether Title VII protects gay, lesbian, and transgender employees had the justices expressing concerns about how their ruling might play out for transgender individuals in schools or the workplace.


The justices hear arguments Oct. 8 in a set of cases about whether federal employment-discrimination law protects workers on the basis of sexual orientation or transgender status.
