The father of a high school girls’ hockey player in Winthrop, Mass., was charged Tuesday with disturbing the peace after allegedly shining a laser pointer in the eyes of an opposing goalie during a recent game.
Joseph Cordes, whose daughter plays hockey for Winthrop High School, is accused of causing the commotion on Feb. 29, during a first-round playoff game between Winthrop and the Medway-Ashland (Mass.) High School team. During the third period, Cordes allegedly shined a green laser pointer at the Medway goalie, “disrupting the game play and eliciting a highly emotional reaction from players and parents alike,” according to police.
At the time, Cordes was sitting high up in the bleacher by himself, “with his right arm folded under his left and apparently cupping something in his right hand,” police said. Witnesses told police they noticed what appeared to be a laser shining on the goalie’s helmet, and traced the path of the laser back to Cordes.
Cordes was immediately ejected from the arena by Winthrop assistant Superintendent Lisa Howard, whose daughter also plays on the Winthrop team, the .
