The National Association of State Boards of Education has named Francis Eberle as its new deputy executive director.

For the last year, Eberle has led the group’s work on the Next Generation Science Standards, which included providing outreach to state boards of education about adoption and implementation of the new standards. Prior to that, he served as director of the 55,000-member National Science Teachers Association—a four-year tenure that ended in dismissal, to the surprise of many science educators and for reasons that were not publicly explained.

Eberle, 60, also served as director of the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance for a decade and taught middle school science for 15 years.

He will replace Bradley J. Hull, who served as NASBE’s deputy executive director for more than three years before leaving the organization in June.

Eberle’s promotion goes into effect immediately.
