Louisiana’s Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards said Wednesday he thinks state Superintendent John White is in his position illegally, according to the Associated Press.
White was appointed by the state board in 2012, but Edwards, who was elected last year, has not appointed enough members to the board to oust the superintendent.
Similarly, former Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal’s appointees don’t have enough votes to renew White’s contract.
White has been operating on a month-to-month contract since January 2016.
The board, the superintendent, and the state’s district superintendents have sparred over the state’s accountability plan under the Every Student Succeeds Act.
In a radio interview Wednesday, Edwards said White needed to be appointed by the state Senate this last session in order to stay in office, which didn’t happen.
“We’re taking a look at that situation,” the governor said, according to the Associated Press. “That may be something that needs to be litigated.”
