Los Angeles Seniority Settlement Overturned

A landmark settlement in a case over teacher seniority and layoffs has been overturned by an appeals court, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The 2010 settlement in Reed v. California shielded more than 40 schools from seniority-based layoff provisions, after lawyers for the ACLU and other groups sued the state and the Los Angeles school district on behalf of students in three of those schools, which were heavily staffed by novices and lost more than half of their teachers. But United Teachers Los Angeles appealed, arguing that the court had not ruled on the merits of the case.

The plaintiffs in the suit plan to appeal to the state Supreme Court.
