As shown by the recent statewide teacher walkouts and protests—several of which have resulted in higher pay and more school funding—teachers are feeling a wave of political empowerment. And some teachers are taking their activism a step further and running for state office.
In fact, the number of teacher-candidates for governorships and roles in state legislatures is growing by the day in states like Oklahoma, Arizona, and West Virginia. In West Virginia, some teacher-candidates have already won their primaries for state house and senate seats, according to the American Federation of Teachers.
Education Week wants to know more about these teacher-candidates—who and where they are, and why they’re running.
