Welcome to Learning Without Limits

Welcome to Learning Without Limits, a new blog at Education Week that will focus on expanding learning time—both inside the classroom and out—in innovative ways.

My name is Laura Heinauer-Mellett, and I am a writer living near Austin, Texas, specializing in education issues. Before turning to freelancing, I spent about eight years as an education reporter for the Austin American-Statesman. My husband and I have three children, including one who is a 2nd grader and another who is just starting preschool.

As both a reporter and a mother, I've been very interested in all the latest innovations in education for a number of years.

Topics I will write about here include new trends in after-school education and summer learning, what schools are doing with the extra hours or days they've added to the calendar, how technology is transforming learning, and novel uses of school and classroom space.

It's a very exciting and broad area to cover, and I'm eager to start.
