In ‘Superman’s’ Shadow

A Pittsburgh high school that is singled out for criticism in the film “Waiting for Superman” is working to salvage its reputation. Among Oliver High’s improvement strategies are a zero-tolerance discipline policy (including a ban on hats and musical gadgets); an hour-long morning class period devoted specifically to addressing students’ academic progress and goals; and the installation of a notice board in the teachers’ professional development room that displays students’ pictures along with “data cards” on their academic performance. “I want [teachers] to be thinking, ‘How can I help that student get better,’ every time they see them, whether it’s in class or in a hallway or outside school,” says Principal Dennis Chakey.
