You may have heard the news that Cathie Black, a publishing executive with no apparent background in education, has been chosen as the next chancellor of New York City schools.
Well, turnabout is fair play, right? In a move designed to cast doubt on her qualifications for the position, a small group of New York City teachers marched into the Hearst Corporation headquarters earlier this week to apply for Black’s job as chairperson, reports WNYC News.
Retired teacher Betty Davis, who participated in the walk-in, called Black’s appointment an “outrageous double standard.” Gloria Mattera, public school parent and Green Party member, also went to Hearst, and said, “You will see if you review my resume that I am absolutely unqualified to run a publishing company, which is exactly what Cathie Black is to run the NYC Public School system.”
The protesters were stopped by Hearst’s head of security and left their resumes.
Black spent the same day touring a Bronx public school. She will take over the position vacated by Joel Klein on January 3.
