Talk about trying to hit all the bases: A new public television multimedia project for teens combines algebra instruction with hip hop, fashion, video games, and reality television. What, they couldn’t fit obsessive texting in there somewhere?
Seriously, though: The website component of the project (run by New York’s Channel Thirteen), while still in preview mode, looks like a good resource. The idea behind the initiative is to encourage students to use algebriac formulas to solve real-world problems. That’s an approach we know a lot of math educators are trying to move toward.
Advisers for the project include Stanford University’s Keith Devlin (NPR’s “Math Guy”) and Deborah L. Ives, a veteran math teacher and instructional leader in New Jersey.
