This week (July 17-23, 2011) marks the 4th annual National Parenting Gifted Children Week, which runs in conjunction with the SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) annual conference. (See also: Press Release.) As perks of the conference this year, even for those of us who were unable to attend, SENG is offering a few great resources, free, online.
The first is an eBook titled The Joy and the Challenge: Parenting Gifted Children. It is available as a free download from Smashwords and you can download it in almost any format that suits your needs (PDF, view online, Kindle, ePub, Palm, and others). The book’s authors include Edward Amend, a psychologist who specializes in working with gifted youth, Jean Goerss, a pediatrician whose parenting and professional work include a variety of ventures in gifted education, James Webb, founder of SENG, author, publisher, psychologist, and consultant, Richard Olenchak, professor, author, psychologist, and Past President of the National Association for Gifted Children, and Carolyn Kottmeyer, founder and webmistress of the ultimate online resource on giftedness, the Hoagies Gifted Education page, and other authors. Topics include Advocacy, Identification, Underachievement, Twice Exceptionalism, Misdiagnosis, Parenting Issues, and Challenges. Each chapter also concludes with a wealth of suggested resources on that topic. As is asked in the NPGC Week flyer, “Does anyone really know what you’re going through as a parent of a gifted child?” Well, SENG does and the authors in this free eBook do. It’s a great place to start!
Also available from SENG now is free access to a SENGinar (webinar) titled “Is it a Gift or a Curse? What it means to be an Outlier... and what to do about it!” by Victoria Ragsdell.
