Being able to share conversations with students about literature they are drawn is a great passion of mine. Teenagers still love to read, they just haven't been given enough permission or choice in school usually to go after the genres or content that appeals to them. We need to find ways to allow students to read what interests them and teach them the skills they need through that content. This is how we will develop a real love and passion for reading that will grow as students grow.

Whether we talk about the how or why of assessment, it always comes back to the communication of learning and different things that dilute that discussion.

Each educator has something valuable to teach me whether it is about the culture of the school or the content he or she teaches that I try to spend a portion of each day just listening. It's in this way that I can best serve my community so that when it comes time to have to make a decision collaboratively or otherwise, I know I'm doing it with the most integrity I can.

Taking risks has become a hallmark of my career and they aren't all winners. Sometimes they flop and I have to be comfortable with that. I must share those failures as well as the successes or else the context is lost. In education, each up hinges on the down that came before it and the more transparent we are about that with our colleagues and students, the richer the learning environments are.

Virtual Enterprise is evidence that real-world, project-based learning promotes student engagement and quality learning experiences. These practices can be implemented in every classroom, at every level and every content area where appropriate, so long as there is support in place to ensure the successful launch of that implementation.

School must be a place where students feel stimulated and excited about learning new things, experimenting and taking risks that stretch their thinking, not shut down by folks who feel the need to control them and how they think.

The more we offer students learning experiences that ask them to collaborate, consider multiple texts and genres of text and then provide them opportunity to think deeply about the learning, the more connected and meaningful their learning will be.

Going gradeless was an idea that would begin to address a more active involvement by the students in the learning. I shared my thoughts with the staff and the School Council but cautioned them that I would need to seek approval from the Board prior to it becoming a reality. Initial reactions by most was to wonder if I hadn't taken a few too many hits to the head in a previous career.

What happens when a school community decides it is time to emphasize learning over grades? Magic! Students are capable of so much more than we know; we must trust, release control and provide lots of feedback to support and empower our learners of all ages.
