There are many steps to the application process for teaching positions and you should be prepared to spend a considerable amount of time preparing each application. Here are some tips to help you in your job search and the application process:

  • Have a professional email address that is separate from your personal email address. Create an address using your first and last name or continue to use your University’s email address, if possible.
  • Check your voicemail message! If it has been awhile since you have listened to your voicemail message, please do so and be sure to change it to a very simple, professional message and remove any ring back tones that you may have.
  • If you have a landline in your home, be sure to check the voicemail message and change it to a professional message. Also, if you have roommates be sure to inform them that there may be potential employers calling the home and to please answer the phone professionally and retrieve any message information for you (leave a notepad and pen next to the phone to make it that much easier for them).
  • Inventory your social networks and be sure all content is professional. I always say, if there is anything on your social networks that you would not feel comfortable explaining to a school board, administrator or parent..........REMOVE IT IMMEDIATELY! You are transitioning from college to career and your social networks should reflect that.
  • Keep your references informed of your application status. Send them an email or phone them to let them know when you have submitted applications and to where. This helps them to prepare for a reference check phone call that may be coming their way. As well, keep them informed of the outcome, did you get the job? If so, send them a thank you for their support of your application and if you did not get the job, acknowledge their continued support of your applications.
  • Prepare your interview attire. Have your professional ensemble planned out, shoes polished, etc. Plan to wear minimal jewelry/accessories, this includes piercings and tattoo coverage (as much as possible) so that the focus is on you and your teaching experiences and informed interview responses!
  • Do your research! Be informed about the school district you are applying to. Learn what their mission and goals are by visiting their website. Check out what activities, sports etc. the district participates in. Likewise, check out the community (community sites, Google, Zillow, etc.) to determine if you will be happy and fulfilled in this community beyond working hours.
